Team Taylor's bid for gold at the U18 Provincial Championships will have to wait after the Parksville event was postponed by Curl BC on Thursday.

BC Curling is the latest sports organization to announce the postponement of major events due concerns over the spread of the coronavirus.

The BC U18 Championships in Parksville, BC Club Challenge in New West and the AMJ Campbell Mixed Championships in Parksville have been cancelled.

Tunnel Town’s Meredith Cole and Keira McCoy are members of Team Taylor who were considered the favourite on the girls side at the U18 provincials. The Mixed Championships were to feature Cody Tanaka from Tunnel, along with the Daniels family (sisters Sarah, Megan and their father Ernie) from Delta Thistle.

The announcement came shortly after the World Curling Federation cancelled the Women’s World Championships in Prince George. Curling Canada also postponed the Canadian Mixed Doubles, Senior and Wheelchair Championships.

“First and foremost is the safety of the community and the athletes,” said Curl BC CEO Scott Braley. “We are hoping to reschedule these provincial events and will have further information to share as soon as it is available. “We know athletes, fans and volunteers have been hard at work for months in preparation for these events so we understand that there will be disappointment.

"We are especially sorry for the community in Prince George who would have been hosting a world curling championship for the first time in their history.

“Please rest assured that we are doing everything we can to keep everyone informed and to avoid any unnecessary health and safety risks.”
