DDRC crew 2nd in prestigious Seattle race

U19 coaxed squad battles high-profile teams at Windermere Cup

For the first time since its inception 35 years ago, Delta Deas Rowing Club qualified athletes to participate in the prestigious Windermere Cup in Seattle.

This year’s 33rdedition, held on May 1, saw DDRC go up against top-ranked University of Washington and Boston University, along with the German national team, who all made the trip to Lake Washington and the famous Montlake Cut.

The Delta Women’s U19 coxed quad included Danika Vangsgaard, Caitlin Lawrence, Rachel Mehling, Sophie Byrne-Atkins, and coxswain Nicole Yeung.  They finished an impressive second in their race, narrowly losing out to a Seattle Rowing Centre crew made up of US national team prospects.

“The Windermere Cup is a huge regatta with thousands of screaming fans out to support the athletes. The Delta girls quad performed really well in hanging on to the crew from Seattle Rowing Centre, battling it out through the middle of the race, at which point Seattle managed to slip ahead,” said Delta Junior coach Kris Davis.

“Our crew kept pushing back and held onto a strong second place. Under significant pressure, in an environment the girls hadn’t experienced before, they did Delta proud!”
