Delta Gymnastics’ Provincial Gymnaestrada team travelled to Victoria last weekend for the 2019 BC Gymnaestrada.

The event’s theme, which was hosted by Lion’s Pride Gymnastics and PLAY Gymnastics BC, was Welcome to the Jungle!

Gymnaestrada is a unique form of gymnastics that incorporates music to a choregraphed performance.

“Gymnaestrada is a combination of dance, acrobatics and gymnastics that includes participants regardless of age, gender or ability,” explained  Gymnaestrada coach Sarah Chan. “Gymnaestrada is a celebration of movement in a non-competitive environment and is a great example of Gymnastics for All.”

Gymnastics for All is a philosophy of sports and recreation that combines fun, fitness and fundamentals; the emphasis on building transferable skills that can be used in several, different sports.

Delta Gymnastics was one of 23 clubs that attended workshops and performances over the weekend.

Workshops included yoga, juggling, cheerleading and acrobatics.  The goals of BC Gymnaestrada are to encourage the progress of PLAY Gymnastics for All, inspire joy in exercise, and showcase the growth of participants.

An increasing number of gymnastics clubs are broadening their programs to fit people of all ages and abilities.

“Gymnaestrada’s emphasis is on friendship and comradery”, added Chan. “Its great to watch people come together from different backgrounds and perspectives and just enjoy physical movement and music.”

Delta Gymnastics Society offers programs from infants to seniors at their Ladner facility year-round.  For information of events, programs and activities visit the club's website.
