The South Delta Sun Devils have advanced to the quarter-finals at the Fraser Valley Grade 8 Girls Basketball Championships. City champion Delta Pacers lost in the round of 16 yesterday.

The South Delta Sun Devils Grade 8 girls basketball team is still standing following a turbulent week for the Fraser Valley Championships.

Tuesday’s school closures and continued poor driving conditions resulted in the 32-team Grade 8 tournaments not starting until Thursday and playing right through the weekend.

That’s a far better scenario than what happened at the junior level where two days of postponed games resulted in the boys and girls tournaments being reduced from 32 to 16 teams.

The No. 8 seeded Sun Devils opened the Grade 8 girls draw with a 44-14 win over Samuel Robertson Technical on Thursday, then defeated #8 seed Langley Christian 37-26 on Saturday.

That sets up a quarter-final match-up with No. 1 Walnut Grove on Sunday night at the Langley school. Regardless of the outcome, South Delta will be playing again on Tuesday and Wednesday when the tournament concludes at Seaquam Secondary.

City champion and No. 7 seed Delta Pacers opened wth a 48-30 win against No. 26 North Surrey but were then bounced following a 17-13 loss to Clayburn yesterday.

In Junior girls action, city champion Seaquam and runner-up South Delta remained part of the 16-team draw.

The No. 8 Seahawks opened with a 58-56 win against No. 9 WJ Mouat then dropped a 96-36 decision to No. 1 Terry Fox on Saturday.

The No. 13 Sun Devils hung tough with #4 MEI, dropping a 53-46 decision in round of 16 action.
