The Delta Ice Hawks will have to wait another game before unveiling their new captain and prize recruit.

Forward Michael Farren is expected to make his debut on Saturday when the Hawks continue their Pacific Junior Hockey League cohort schedule on the road against the defending champion North Vancouver Wolf Pack. The 20-year-old will miss his third straight game tonight (Tuesday) when Delta hosts the Langley Trappers as he completes a mandatory 14-day quarantine as a newly signed PJHL player.

The Surrey native has played four seasons in the Western Hockey League, including the past two with the Kelowna Rockets where he had eight goals and 27 points in more than 91 games. He began his WHL career in Saskatoon and his current major junior rights currently belong to Swift Current.

WHL players have been granted conditional releases until the Christmas break to play in other junior leagues. The WHL is slated to start its regular season in January.

The decision to name him Delta’s captain was made by GM and head coach Steve Robinson after he consulted with his assistants and players.

“Bottom line for me was we have lots of 20’s and some good assistant candidates, but it made sense to take advantage of Mike’s time here and experiences to provide leadership and guidance to our group until Christmas,” explained Robinson. “If WHL starts and he leaves, we will have some runway to see how the leadership group develops and name a successor then. If the WHL doesn’t start or he doesn’t leave for whatever reason then we are in good shape with him as our leader.”

The Hawks slipped to 1-2-0-0 in cohort play after a 4-1 loss to North Vancouver on Saturday night. They rallied to edge Langley 4-3 in their home opener last Tuesday on a late goal from Jordan Kojima.
