The Ladner Pioneers took a 1-0 series lead over the Nanaimo Timbermen with a 9-8 win on Thursday night at Sungod Arena in North Delta.

The Ladner Pioneers took a 1-0 series lead in the provincial senior B lacrosse final with a 9-8 win over the Nanaimo Timbermen Thursday night at Sungod Arena in North Delta.

The defending champs from Nanaimo looked solid early opening up a 5-3 lead after the opening frame, but Ladner regrouped in the second period outscoring the Timbermen 5-2 to take an 8-7 lead – a lead they would hold onto the rest of the way.

Spencer Bromley paced the offensive attack with two goals and four assists, while Ryan Keith scored three times and added one helper. Connor Davidson, Luke Wiles, Tyler Kirky and Riley Phillips all scored singles with Kirkby and Phillips each chipping in with a pair of assists.

Eric Kratz was solid between the pipes stopping 31 of 39 Nanaimo shots as Ladner outshot the Timbermen 50-39.

Game two in the best-of-five West Coast Senior League final is Saturday night in Nanaimo with game three on Sunday back at Sungod Arena set for a 4:30 p.m. start.

If a game four is needed it would be back in Nanaimo Tuesday with a series deciding game five if needed Thursday night, Aug. 13 at Sungod.

The Pioneers punched their ticket to the league final after sweeping the Victoria Wolves 3-0 in their semi-final series while the Timbermen won their semi-final series with the Coquitlam Adanacs 3-1.
