It was podium finishes for a trio of Delta teams at the inaugural South Fraser Zone Basketball Championships.
City teams dominated the Grade 8 girls tourney in Richmond with the Burnsview Griffins taking top honours with a 28-24 victory over South Surrey’s Elgin Park Orcas in last Thursday’s title game.
The Delta champions opened with a 37-19 victory over Pacific Academy then rolled to a 51-20 triumph against Richmond champs McMath.
It was nearly an all-Delta championship game as the South Delta Sun Devils were trimmed 37-35 by Elgin in the other final four match-up.
The Devils rebounded to defeat McMath 64-37 in the third place game.
South Delta opened the tournament by outlasting Holy Cross 52-48.
Meanwhile in Surrey, the Seaquam Seahawks were trimmed 30-29 in the junior girls championship game.
The Delta champions reached the final with earlier wins over McMath (61-30) and Holy Cross (44-37).
The Delta Pacers placed fifth after defeating South Delta 35-30. The Devils were trimmed 54-50 by McMath a day earlier in the semi-finals.
The Pacers rebounded from a 36-25 quarter-final loss to Fleetwood Park with a win over Tamanawis (29-28) before falling to Holy Cross (44-37).
The South Fraser junior boys tourney at Semiahmoo was dominated by Surrey teams.
Delta champion Seaquam fell 59-51 to Holy Cross in the quarter-finals. Runner-up Delta was edged 59-55 by McMath in the opening round.
City champion North Delta Huskies showed well in the Grade 8 boys tourney, finishing fourth after losing 61-53 to Holy Cross.
The Huskies defeated Pacific Academy 51-48 in the quarter-finals then dropped a 71-23 decision to Semiahmoo.
The Grade 9 tournaments go this week with the boys in North Delta and the girls at South Delta.
