Road to first place finish becoming clearer for Sun Devils

South Delta moves up to No. 2 in latest provincial rankings

Evan Paterson (7) has four touchdowns as a receiver in two conference games and also leads his team in tackles.

Just two weeks into Western AAA Conference play and the South Delta Sun Devils already have a good idea of what their path looks like for a potential first place finish.

The Sun Devils overwhelmed the Carson Graham Eagles 54-6 last Saturday at Dennison Park to improve to 4-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play. The result also leaves them and the New West Hyacks as the lone undefeated teams in the division. They also happen to now be ranked No. 2 and No. 1 in the province respectively.

South Delta will be big favourites in two of its remaining games including Saturday’s visit to Tsawwassen by the Handsworth Royals (1-1). Belmont (0-2) is also struggling while perennial powerhouse Mt. Doug is off to an 0-2 start after losses to New West (33-21) and Vancouver College (35-14).

Win those three games and the Devils have big road tilts looming against Notre Dame (1-1) on Oct. 11 and the season finale at New West Nov. 1.

It’s no wonder head coach Ray Moon was at Mercer Stadium last Friday watching the Hyacks defeat the Jugglers 36-14.

“Notre Dame had something like seven turnovers in the opening half and that’s awfully difficult to overcome,” said Moon. “The teams were much closer than the score showed.”

Moon also believes Vancouver College is very much a factor despite his team’s 38-23 victory over the former No. 1 ranked team two weeks ago. The Irish host New West Oct. 19 and Notre Dame Nov. 1.

“We made them settle for field goals but again the game was closer than what the final score indicated,” he added.

Just how efficient were the Sun Devils last Saturday? Enough for starting quarterback Ben McDonald to leave the game at halftime after throwing three touchdown passes and running in another.

It was another big afternoon for the Sun Devils defence with majors from Evan Davies and Rhys Porteous on interceptions. Adam Hoegg also picked off a pass.

With the Sun Devils already out to a huge lead, the second half was played in running time and took about 30 minutes to complete.
