The 22nd annual Steveston Icebreaker 8km Run/Walk will have a new wrinkle when it hits the village streets on Sunday, Jan. 20.
Organizers have partnered up with Richmond’s New Balance store to add a 1km Kidsrun that will get underway at 8:30 a.m. — 30 minutes prior to the main event. All proceeds from the KidsRun will go to the Richmond KidSport chapter — the non-profit organization that provides grants for city children to play organized sports.
“Our goal for adding the New Balance Kidsrun, is to encourage the community to be active and get parents/families out running with their children; also hopefully bringing out different sectors of the community to enjoy a day of fun, health and fitness,” said race director Jared Hulme.
“Additionally, we hope to raise some money and bring awareness to KidSport Richmond which helps hundreds of Richmond children participant in sport each year. KidSport has such a huge impact across the country, helping out thousands of kids yearly so we want to make sure Richmond residents don't miss out on participating in sport, simply due to the cost.”
Each Kidsrun finisher will receive an inaugural New Balance Kidsrun Ribbon and there will be free Run, Jump, and Throw demo by coaches from the Kajaks Track and Field Club after the run, where kids can go through the station and get coaching tips.
Parents are encouraged to cheer their children on and run along beside their kids or can push strollers as well.
“New Balance Richmond is thrilled to be associated with the Steveston Icebreaker - such a well run race winding through the scenic Steveston waterfront. We’re particularly excited this year due to the addition of the (New Balance Kidsrun) — a great way to encourage our youth to experience the benefits of exercise in a supportive setting,” said Jordan Cluff, owner New Balance Richmond, located at the Centre of Garden City.
Hulme adds he is expecting another big turnout for the main event which has significantly grown in recent years and serves as the opener of the Lifestages Lower Mainland Road Race Series and second race of the BC Super Series.
The Steveston Icebreaker is an important fundraiser for the Kajaks which has been serving Richmond for over 55 years.
There will once again be a free community-run expo a the Steveston Community Centre from 9 to 11 a.m. for all to enjoy. It will feature food sampling, music and more.
