Sun Devils shine in battle of Delta

South Delta cruises to 27-0 win over Seaquam with top ranked Vancouver College up next

The South Delta Sun Devils didn’t let any potential distractions get in the way of their second straight Delta Cup triumph.

The No. 5 ranked Sun Devils (2-0-0) own the city’s football bragging rights after a convincing 27-0 road victory over the Seaquam Seahawks on Saturday afternoon to conclude their non-conference schedule.

It was a rare missed game for longtime head coach Ray Moon and for good reason with his daughter getting married.

It was also a big day for the McDonald family with two of assistant coach Bruce’s sons — Jack and Grant — playing for the final time together in Vancouver as the Calgary Dinosaurs took on UBC at Thunderbird Stadium. The Seahawks were even gracious enough to move the start time up to avoid a conflict.

Finally, the Sun Devils couldn’t be blamed for looking ahead on their schedule with No. 1 ranked Vancouver College coming to Dennison Park next Saturday (1:30 p.m.) to open Western Conference play in a big early season tilt.

Instead, they put in a proficient performance that produced a 20-0 halftime lead and paved the way for plenty of playing time for everyone.

When quarterback Ben McDonald tossed his third touchdown pass of the day in the opening drive of the third quarter — a 11-yard strike to Ethan Troniak — his afternoon was done. A few minutes later, he was off with his dad to Thunderbird Stadium.

South Delta set the tone early when its defence turned back the Seahawks on a fourth down gamble from the 22-yard-line after a penalty-aided opening drive.

The Devils then marched methodically 78-yards the other way — capped by a 19-yard TD pass from McDonald to Jackson Bailie. McDonald then ran in the two-point convert.

The visitors then struck again on their second possession with senior standout Alec Patterson showcasing his athleticism on a 60-yard reverse.

Seaquam's best threat to score was snuffed out on a fumble recovery at the South Delta 15-yard-line. The Sun Devils promptly went the other way and essentially sealed the outcome when a fourth and five gamble turned into Paterson’s second major of the day from 35 yards out.

It was another solid outing for the South Delta defence that has yet to surrender a point this season. It generated a number of turnovers — led by cornerback Evan Davies. He returned one for a touchdown, only to have it called back on an illegal block. A second major for him was nullified on a roughing the passer call.

Rhys Porteous set-up his team’s final major on a terrific return to open the second half.

End Zone…

Not only are the Devils hosting the province’s top ranked team on Saturday, it’s an opponent that handed them a pair of tough defeats last season.

South Delta dropped a 35-34 thriller at Vancouver College then fell 44-12 to the Irish in the provincial quarter-finals at B.C. Place.

McDonald suffered a broken thumb in the second quarter of that post-season tilt with his team leading 12-7.
