Sun Devils shut-out Royals

South Delta snaps two-game slide

The South Delta Sun Devils started slow, but finished strong in a 33-0 road win against Handsworth Friday afternoon in North Vancouver.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for South Delta who now sit at 2-3 in conference play and 2-3 overall.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Sun Devils got on the board as quarterback Ben McDonald hit Andrew Kraft for a 25-year major.

McDonald then completed TD passes to Caleb Van Til (12 yards), Evan Patterson (12 yards) and Ethan Troniak (22 yards).

He capped the day by calling his own number on a fourth-and-short, breaking free for a 40-yard major.

McDonald went 16-for-30 for 289 yards and four TD passes, while also rushing for 55 and a score.

Paterson was South Delta’s top receiver hauling in 96 yards on the day, while Troniak finished with 71 yards.

“We do feel pretty good about it, but the game still had its ups and downs,” said head coach Ray Moon. “We had three touchdowns called back on penalties and time ran out in the first half and we had the ball at the half yard line of Handsworth, so if we could have capitalized on a couple of other chances. We started out a bit slow in the first half, but as the game progressed we were able to pick it up and come out with a timely win.”

South Delta hosts Seaquam on Saturday (1:30 p.m. kick-off) then finishes its season with another home contest against Notre Dame on Oct. 27.

Moon said he considers Seaquam another ‘must win’ game.

“We have to keep the intensity up,” said Moon, adding that their previously scheduled final home game on Nov. 3 against Belmont has been cancelled as they folded their program. “It’s the battle of Delta with our nemesis from the other side of the municipality coming to our field. They have a good sized line so we will have to find a way to neutralize their offensive line and get Ben some protection to find his receivers and hopefully work more on the run game to keep them guessing.”
