Taiwan academy team makes a splash in Richmond

Fuyuan overcomes wet weather to capture B.C. Baseball's 16-team John Main Tournament.

Mother Nature threw a curve ball at B.C. Baseball’s annual John Main Tournament but it still had the opportunity to showcase the 16-team event’s main attraction.

The Fuyuan Baseball Academy from Taiwan capped a perfect run in Richmond with a win over Burnaby in Sunday’s championship game at Brighouse Park.

Fuyuan opened play Thursday night with a win over the Vancouver Community Capilanos in front of an estimated crowd of 500. The team had an off-day Friday and was scheduled to play its final two pool game on Saturday. Instead, a steady downpour wreaked havoc with the schedule.

Brighouse, which was being utilized as the showcase diamond, was deemed unplayable.

That left organizers scrambling and cost one of the host teams an opportunity to play Fuyuan.

A Saturday afternoon tilt between the Richmond City Baseball Chuckers Blue and Taiwan was removed from the schedule entirely since the hosts were already out of playoff contention with a 1-1 record.

Instead Fuyuan defeated Cloverdale on Saturday night at Palmer in a battle of unbeaten teams to advance Sunday morning’s semi-final where it came through with another win over Victoria. Burnaby defeated North Shore on its journey to the final.
