Tsawwassen curlers Cody Tanaka and Shawna Jensen will be making their debuts on the national stage starting tomorrow morning in Winnipeg at the Canadian Mixed Championships.

Team Tanaka won the right to represent BC nationally back in April at the 2018 AMJ Campbell Van Lines BC Mixed Curling Championship, which was held at Team Tanaka’s home club of Richmond Curling Centre.

For the former Tunnel Town Curling Club junior standouts, along with second Travis Cameron, it will be their first time competing at a Canadian Championship. Tanaka previously represented BC as a coach with Team Neighbour at the 2018 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship.

Lead Catera Park is the team’s veteran in regards to experience representing BC, having competed in the 2018 Canadian Junior Curling Championships with Team Reese-Hansen and the 2015 Optimist U18 International Curling Championships with Team Drexel.

The 2019 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, which is taking place at Fort Rouge Curling Club, will begin with a round robin with two pools of seven teams each (10 teams representing each province and four teams representing the three territories and Northern Ontario).

After round robin play, the top four teams in each pool will progress to the Championship Pool and the bottom three teams in each pool will move on to the Seeding Pool. The teams in the Championship Pool will be battling for the opportunity to represent Canada at the 2019 World Mixed Curling Championship.

Team BC’s first draw will be at 8 a.m. (PST) Monday against Team Alberta, which is skipped by 1992 Canadian Mixed Curling Champion Kurt Balderston. BC will also meet Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, New Brunswick, Ontario and Prince Edward Island in the round robin. Playoffs begin on Thursday, with the semi-finals and gold medal final taking place on Saturday.
