Jace Minni has produced one of the biggest wins of his promising golf career - capturing the Zone 4 Men’s Amateur Championship on the weekend.

The 17-year-old Beach Grove Golf Club junior member fired rounds of 69 and 70 at King’s Links by the Sea (Ladner) and Quilchena (Richmond) for a 6-under total and a one shot victory over Trevor Yu. Zone 4 is one of the largest in the province and features the top players from Vancouver, Richmond, Delta, Point Roberts, North Shore, Burnaby and the Sunshine Coast.

Minni, 17, showcased his all-round game on two entirely different courses.

King’s Links (round one) is a tradition links style course while Quilchena (round two) features narrow fairways and plenty of trees.

“Kings Links doesn’t really suit my game that well. I usually play well on courses that have tight fairways since I hit the ball straighter than most people,” said the 17-year-old South Delta Secondary student. “But the wind was blowing a lot and I feel like I’m a strong wind player, so that gave me an advantage.

“Quilchena was a good course for me since it has trees and it doesn’t play that long. I can hit short iron or wedge into most holes.”

Minni’s busy summer schedule will see him head to Nanoose Bay next for the B.C. Junior Boys Championships (July 2-5). It’s then off to Pemberton for the B.C. Men’s Amateur (July 9-12).

In August, it will be the Canadian Junior Boys Championship in Nova Scotia. He will also attend a sectional qualifier for the U.S. Amateur.

Golf has always been a big part of Minni’s life.

His dad Scott is a teaching professional and his sister Amanda is a member of the Oregon State University women’s team.

“I am hoping to get some offers to go play (NCAA) Division One golf in the States,” he added. “That’s been my goal and dream for a very long time and I feel like I am very capable of doing it.”
