National water polo team member Hayley McKelvey enjoyed a standout collegiate career at USC.

Delta’s Hayley McKelvey is among 11 athletes named to the Canadian women’s water polo team headed to the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

The 23-year-old Seaquam graduate started playing water polo when she was nine and was a member of the Canadian senior national team by the time she was 16. She is the youngest girl from B.C. to ever play for the national team and took her career to USC where she helped the Trojans win the NCAA Championship in her senior year.

The Canadian team will head to Peru with a lot of experience as six of the 11 players competed at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto and won a silver medal. The stakes are particularly high as the Lima 2019 Pan American Games represent a crucial Olympic qualification opportunity –  the gold medallists in each tournament qualify directly for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The water polo tournament will take place at theComplejo Deportivo Villa Maria del Triunfo from Aug. 4-9.
