Delta MP Carla Qualtrough on expressing gratitude in face of COVID-19

Dear Delta,

As the days get warmer, we are heading into a week that many look forward to. For Christians, this is the most important celebration of their faith in the year. And for all members of our community, this is the traditional beginning of Spring, marked by pancake breakfasts, egg hunts, and visits from the Easter bunny. Many of these events cannot take place this year or will be conducted in a much different way.

I want to acknowledge the toll this pandemic is taking on families, businesses and our community.

Times are tough. Businesses are closing down. People are losing their jobs. Bills are piling up. Our local non-profits have lost donations, and their volunteer numbers are way down. Students aren’t in school. Kids can’t play on playgrounds, hang out with their friends, or visit grandparents.

People are worried. Families are concerned about the health and possible vulnerability of seniors, particularly those in long-term care or residences. Support care is limited or unavailable for children and adults with complex disabilities. Our health care workers are stretched, exhausted and heroically saving lives around the Lower Mainland.

People are also getting sick. Our community is not immune.

I can assure you that we will get through this. This crisis will end.  It will be challenging and test us all. But it will end.

And I believe that those special qualities that make us uniquely and proudly Canadian will be what gets us through. Canadians are kind and compassionate. Canadians are community-minded and put others first. Canadians trust science and experts. Canadians work together in times of hardship. Canadians respect the rule of law and enormously respect those who bravely enforce it and keep us safe.

Deltans are taking this pandemic seriously. We are staying home. We are working from home when we can. We are physical distancing. We are washing our hands. We are limiting our trips to the store. We are finding creative ways to remotely connect with each other and our loved ones. We are worshipping, attending classes and reaching out for help online.

In doing these things, we are saving lives. We are limiting the spread of this terrible virus. The trajectory of this pandemic is absolutely in the hands of each and every one of us.

In closing, let’s all continue to thank and show our support for the health care workers, first responders, and other essential workers who are taking care of us, keeping us safe, and putting food on our tables. You are all heroes. Words alone cannot express our gratitude and appreciation.

As always, my team and I are here to help in any way we can.

Stay safe,

Carla
