Westland Insurance started in a small office in Ladner, B.C.—when it was still called Cory Insurance—40 years ago.
Today, the company has two offices in Ladner, with expert teams serving their community in both locations.
Over the past 40 years, Westland Insurance has grown to be one of Canada’s largest insurance brokerages, with branches in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Through their continued growth, they have remained true to their roots as a community-focused family business, actively supporting local causes and building strong relationships with clients in each of their 150 locations.
As Westland Insurance celebrates their 40th anniversary this year, they’re kicking off a 40 Weeks of Giving Campaign to show their appreciation to their clients and communities.
The first charity of the campaign, the Burns Bog Conservation Society, will receive support for their crucial conservation project with a Falcon sponsorship. The funds will go towards education and stewardship events held by the Conservation Society in the Delta Nature Reserve, where the public is able to join. The society continues to advocate for the protection of the remaining area of Burns Bog that falls outside of the conservation area, but is critical for plants and wildlife. The Burns Bog is known as the “Lungs of the Lower Mainland”.
Bogs are ecologically important because they absorb great amounts of precipitation, preventing flooding and absorbing runoff. The peat in bogs is an important place for the storage of carbon that also provides a firebreak because it is extremely wet. In this way, peat bogs also help to mitigate water and fire insurance losses.
Peat bogs cover only three per cent of the Earth’s surface, but they store more carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem. They also provide an important and unique habitat for many species of animals.
