Ladner’s free E-bike charging stations are finding a growing number of users.

The two E-bike chargers in Ladner Village in the plaza at Elliot and 47A Ave were installed in 2023 by the City of Delta and the Rotary Club of Ladner.

“I like that I can bring my own lock and there is a box to secure my charger while the bike is charging,” said resident Darren Hansen. “I can leave my bike, have a coffee, or go shopping while it is being charged. The big advantage of these chargers is that I can plan longer rides and not worry about my battery dying.”

Most E-bikes and E-scooters have a range between 25 and 80 km on a single charge. However, the actual distance varies depending on factors like terrain, speed, riding surface, and pedal-assist level.

“We believe that e-bikes and e-scooters will play a larger role in transportation, sustainability and convenance,” said Ladner Rotarian Chris Offer. “The charging stations are helping make it possible for more people to ride more bikes more often.”

The dock’s wheel wells accommodate wheels from 50-75 cm (20-29-in) in diameter and up to 12 cm (5-in) wide tires. Each dock has illustrated instructions for the user. An active cooling system prevents chargers from overheating while in use.

Some apartment owners and Stata councils have banned storing E-bikes inside the buildings due to a perceived fire risk. The public chargers ensure there is a safe place to charge all E-bike.

“Future bike trail maps will feature E-bike charging stations,” said Offer. “Ladner Village will be an even more trendy destination that it already is for recreational E-bike riders.”
