Organizer Rick Klemm and DSS music director Catherine Campbell hold a snare drum that will be raffled off at the South Delta Drum Festival Sunday at Genesis Theatre.

Drumming steps into the spotlight Sunday at Delta Secondary with the first South Delta Drum Festival.

There will be clinics put on by drummers Craig Scott, Jason Overy and Tristan Helgason, says event organizer Rick Klemm. Each hour-long session will cover different styles of drumming.

While there’s lots to be seen on YouTube, “there’s something to be said about watching live drummers,” he says.

Scott will cover jazz drumming. The accomplished drummer and vibraphone player, his drumming credits include concert and club dates with Canadian jazz luminaries Oliver Gannon, Ian McDougall, Campbell Ryga, PJ Perry and Alan Matheson.

Overy, who divides his time between performing, teaching and composing in the world of percussion, will cover world drumming. He has served as musical director of Uzume Taiko since 2004, providing direction on Uzume’s recordings, collaborative projects and national and international tours. He has played in a variety of local and international bands and has also performed in many popular theatre shows.

Helgason got his first drum set at age 10 and developed an aggressive style early in his career. “Born into grunge and baptized by punk rock,” he has played in metal, country, Afro-Cuban, pop, rock and hip-hop bands. He will cover rock drumming at Sunday’s festival.

The event is presented by Klemm Drums and the DSS music department.

There will be door prizes as well as a raffle for a custom snare drum.

The festival begins at 1 p.m. at Genesis Theatre at Delta Secondary. Tickets cost $10. They are available at the door or contact [email protected].
