Jim Byrnes will play Genesis Theatre March 3.

Bluesman Jim Byrnes will be back at Genesis Theatre in Ladner next Friday.

The award-winning Vancouver blues musician has been performing professionally for over 50 years and has visited the Ladner venue, which has been newly renovated, a few times over that stretch.

This time he says he plans on playing some tunes from his latest album, St. Louis Times, as well as a real mix of music from over the course of his career. Byrnes is a St. Louis, Missouri native and notes the 2014 record is about the place he used to call home.

"In a lot of ways it was a very personal thing because those years that you spend growing up, they stay with you," he says. "It's funny, as you get to a certain age you're able to put a lot of those memories in a closet somewhere or in a drawer and you get a certain time of your life and the drawer opens up and a lot of stuff comes back to you."

Byrnes, a longtime Variety Club supporter, goes back to St. Louis at least once every year for charity events and to see family. Byrnes started playing piano at age five and by 13 he was singing and playing blues guitar. He came to Vancouver in the mid-1970s.

The concert is set for Friday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner. Tickets are $25.

Byrnes says that he'll have a terrific band with him.
