Community forum looks at our food sovereignty

Wonder how the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) can affect our food supply? The Delta chapter of the Council of Canadians is hosting a community forum with Dr. Shiv Chopra next week to explain.

The forum will be held Tuesday, April 12 at the Ladner Community Centre at 7:30 p.m. Chopra is a former Health Canada food safety regulator and now is head of the Canadian Council on Food Sovereignty.

He was instrumental in stopping bovine growth hormone (rBGH) coming into Canada, thereby ensuring the safety of our dairy supply when he was with Health Canada. Chopra will discuss how milk contaminated with rBGH can make its way into the Canadian food supply via the U.S. where it is not banned.

Use of bovine growth hormone in Canadian cows is only one of many food safety and food sovereignty issues that threaten public health if the Canadian government signs onto the TPP, according to the Council of Canadians.

"We are so fortunate that Dr. Chopra is coming to our community," says Lynn Armstrong from the Delta chapter of the Council of Canadians. "He is only making a few stops in B.C. as part of his tour. This is an opportunity for people to learn more about the TPP and discuss their concerns with Dr. Chopra."
