The Earthwise Society is helping Deltans celebrate Garden Days, a Canada-wide initiative to recognize the vital role of gardens and gardening in our communities.
The celebration, which runs from June 16 to 24, will highlight Canada’s gardenculture, history and innovations, and acknowledge the importance of public and privategardens, the value of home gardening and the promotion of environmental stewardship.
Garden Days is an opportunity for Canadians to enjoy their own gardens, participate in their favourite garden activities, visit their local garden centres or enjoy their favourite local public gardens.
The Earthwise Garden in Boundary Bay is in full bloom, so now is the perfect time for a tour and learn how Earthwise celebrates the value of gardens every day. In addition to providing a natural gathering place that brings the community together, the EarthwiseGarden models sustainable gardening practices and demonstrates that it is possible tohave a healthy, beautiful landscape without the use of pesticides.
On Saturday, June 16, Earthwise will be hosting a Grow It Yourself gardening workshop for youth aged 12 to 16 from 11 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn the basics of growing food and get some hands-on practice by making a container herb or lettuce garden to take home. Pre-registration is advised.
Earthwise will also be holding a special Father's Day plant sale on Saturday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Choose from a selection of pesticide-free plants that will be sure to attract pollinators.
Gardening is not just good for the environment, it helps to keep us active, gets us into the fresh air and has a positive impact on mental well-being.
Garden Days offers an opportunity to learn about Earthwise Society's horticultural therapy programs, which harness the intrinsic healing power of nature, and Garden Buddies, a program that helps keep seniors gardening longer.
