Why is the story of Christmas and Epiphany so important?

In a tumultuous world that moves from one attempted solution to another at seemingly lightning speed, the story of Christmas and the full story of the scripture recorded in the bible serves as consistent foundational reminder.

As the chorus of the old Hymn asserts, “We have an anchor that keeps the soul, steadfast and sure while the billows role, fastened to the rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love.”

People of faith in every nation and every corner of our world retell the story every year so that we will never forget that through the incarnation God chose to dwell among us and it is in Jesus that the light of the world has broken into the darkness bringing hope, peace, joy and love.

This is not just some spiritualized dream. It is the lived reality of communities of faith throughout the world.

Communities of faith that live out care and compassion on a daily basis. Communities of faith that encourage the downtrodden with practical support, who welcome the orphan and the stranger. Communities of faith that stand against injustice of all forms. Communities of faith that call out politically expedient decisions that are repeatedly born on the backs of the poor and dispossessed.

Why is the story of Christmas and Epiphany so important? Because it reminds us that there is a different vision for our world.
