Additional traffic signals and a new camera will be installed at several Delta intersections.

The city has issued a request for bids for the construction of a traffic signal at the intersection of 56 Street and 14B Avenue, an emergency warning signal at the intersection of Churchill Street and Ottawa Street by Delta Fire Hall No. 4, as well as a traffic camera at the intersection of Nordel Way and 116 Street.

The projects are to be completed by winter 2024.

The new traffic signal at 56 Street and 14B Avenue in Tsawwassen comes as a result of council’s approval of an application to build a 48-unit market rental apartment building fronting the intersection.

Located at 1467-56 St., the five-story project, at the southwest corner of 14B Avenue and 56 Street, includes the owner providing a voluntary $100,000 contribution for a crosswalk with a traffic signal. It represents approximately one-third of the capital cost with the city picking up the rest.

The city had previously identified the need for a crosswalk with a pedestrian-activated signal at the intersection of 56 Street and 14B Avenue. When the development project was approved over a year ago, council agreed that rather than a pedestrian-activated light, a fixed traffic signal would be a safer alternative.
