Although the digital revolution in video downloads and music streaming caused a decline in a physical music sales, HMV has found ways in recent years to remain profitable thanks to a resurgence in demand for physical music sales as well as a change in its business model.

Five years ago, HMV Canada was acquired by Re:Capital Canada LP, a subsidiary of Hilco UK Ltd., which expanded the store's products from CDs and DVDs to include an e-commerce platform, headphones and accessories, collectibles and other products, as well as vinyl records, which is turning out to be a strong growth area for music retail.

While HMV closed a few stores over the last few years, the chain still has over 100 outlets across Canada with a store opening at Tsawwassen Mills on Oct. 5.

In 2010, HMV Canada launched the pure customer rewards program, which has attracted over 1.5 million paid cardholders.

Located at Highway 17 and 52nd Street on Tsawwassen First Nation Llands, Ivanhoé Cambridge’s Tsawwassen Mills includes approximately 1.2 million square feet of retail, with 16 anchors. It’s described as a unique mix of premium fashion brands, factory outlets, restaurants and first to market retailers, as well as having an 1,100-seat food hall.

A huge throng of shoppers is expected for opening day on Oct. 5.

Throughout the six-day opening celebration, the mall will have various contests and giveaways with the main contest being a $10,000 shopping spree.
