UPDATED: Local state of emergency cancelled in Delta

Sea walls hold as storm surge batters Tsawwassen neighbourhoods

Just about 24 hours after it was declared, the Corporation of Delta cancelled the local state of emergency.

On it's website, the municipality said that the situation in Beach Grove and Boundary Bay no longer required emergency status.

Mayor Lois Jackson made the declaration Tuesday afternoon after an elevated flood risk was identified for high tide at 9 a.m. today. The forecast indicated the high tide would coincide with a storm surge and high winds that made overtopping of the seawalls a strong possibility.

However, high tide passed Wednesday morning and while the waves were high the sea walls appeared to hold the water at bay.

Many local residents joined municipal crews keeping an eye on the situation at the foot of Seaview Road in Boundary Bay early this morning as the water rose.

However, one long time resident was not too concerned.

Bill Kemp has lived in the neighbourhood for more than 40 years and said this year's storm surge was mild compared to others. He said the storm of 2007, which lead to widespread flooding, was much worse.

Kemp, who was keeping watch from hisĀ  parent's beach-front yard, had high praise for the municipality's response to Tuesday's seawall breech.

"The city did a fabulous job," he said, adding that within an hour of the wall's collapse crews were working to put a berm in place.

Municipal crews were scheduled to remain in the area for most of the morning, as the water level receeds. Even though the potential for flooding appears to have passed, Delta staff will continue to monitor tides and weather conditions, and engineering staff will be out inspecting dikes around the community.

Delta staff members have been following the Staged Flood Response Plan for Boundary Bay and Beach Grove, and are at a heightened stage of readiness given the forecast.

Beach access points have been sealed, sand bags and sand are available, message boards have been activated, and additional equipment has been mobilized to the area for possible deployment in case of flooding.

Delta staff took emergency action to erect a temporary berm in place of a collapsed beach wall on Seaview Road in Boundary Bay Tuesday.

The collapse was on private property and was isolated to one residence.
