Letters: Tree programme a great idea but…

The new Delta (free) tree program is an excellent idea looking for better execution.

I think it is a good use of ‘minimal’ amounts of tax dollars for maximum benefits to our future tree canopy. Our kids and grandkids will still benefit; however, I would suggest a few changes for the next programme, presumably this fall.

Based on huge demand, increase the number of trees given out and limit it to one tree per request until all applications are satisfied.

Either give people one of their three preferences or if they are not available, move on to the next application. Based on my personal (anecdotal) information fewer than one in 10 received trees and many/most did not receive any of their three choices. Why bother with the current system if it is not followed?

People seem to be embracing ‘food’ trees like apple, pear etc., so increase those and delete the delicate exotics. Food indolence is positive, and your children/grandchildren will thank you.

Keep up the good work Delta.
