Robin Hood visits the 'Bay

Youth theatre group presents play at Earthwise Society's garden this weekend

A heroic outlaw's adventures will play out at the Earthwise Society's garden in Boundary Bay this weekend.

The Ballad of Robin Hood marks the debut for Acne Prone Productions, a new youth theatre company founded by Rachel Garrett, Sophia Merritt and Cassidy Johnston. Shows take place today, tomorrow and Sunday.

Merritt says audience members can expect "a whole lot of fun."

Garrett echoes that sentiment.

"The cool thing about the show is that it's aimed at kids but it's fun for everybody," she says. "It's an interactive theatre experience instead of just staring at a stage for two hours. The kids get to follow Robin Hood around the garden and go between the scenes."

Johnston adds there are a lot of jokes for kids along with gags and pratfalls but also a few winks and nods to the adults.

"The kind of humour is like Mel Brooks meets pantomime meets ... [a] Disney/Pixar movie," she explains.

There is also some action, including fight scenes, and music in the play.

"I think the music punctuates all of the emotion really nicely. It keeps everything at a really light note," Johnston says.

Overall the production is shaping up very well, the founders conveyed in an interview earlier this week.

"We've been very fortunate in that the crew's been really willing to work and dig into it," says Johnston.

The production has also received generous support from the community, for which the founders are thankful.

"I'm always astounded by how generous people are," Johnston says.

Aaron Moy, who plays Prince John, says the script is very well written.

"It's really astounding what they managed to whip up in such a short time. The script is really entertaining and I'm pretty sure anyone who comes to the show is going to like it," he says.

The Ballad of Robin Hood runs rain or shine until Sunday at Earthwise, 6400-3rd Ave., Tsawwassen. Show times are 7 p.m. today, tomorrow and Sunday as well as 3 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.
