SDSS student Syrah Khan is part of the West Coast premiere of Concord Floral, an award-winning drama that was first presented in Toronto in 2014.

Tsawwassen's Syrah Khan is one of the B.C. youth to be cast for the West Coast premiere of Concord Floral.

The play, which is inspired by 14th century author Boccaccio's The Decameron, will take place at three locations in the Lower Mainland with the first dates set for next week.

It is set in a massive abandoned greenhouse where 10 teens must find refuge from a plague they've brought upon themselves and is cast exclusively with youth from B.C.

"It's really neat because it's an ensemble piece so everyone is very close, and because of that it feels like I can get into the character without having to worry about much," Khan says.

The Grade 11 student at South Delta Secondary says her role is very different from what she's done in the past and that she's mostly been involved in musicals.

She plays Forever Irene, a younger sister to one of the other characters.

Director Erin Brubacher says Khan is a team player who's very dedicated to making the product and process good for the whole group.

Brubacher adds Khan's role is a demanding one and requires a level of vulnerability, which is something that takes maturity.

Concord Floral is written by Jordan Tannahill, directed by Brubacher and Cara Spooner while Erum Khan is the assistant director.

The play will be staged Jan. 19 to 21 at 8 p.m. at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby, from Jan. 25 to 28 at 7 p.m. and Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at the PuSh Festival at Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre in Vancouver and on Feb. 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Studio Theatre at the Surrey Arts Centre.

Tickets range from $10 to $25.
