A number of student athletes from Tsawwassen and Ladner helped Vancouver College turn in a strong performance at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association’s 71st national championship in St. Catherine’s Ontario.

South Delta students attending the Vancouver Catholic School and participating in its rowing program is nothing new.

Alumni of the program include current national senior men’s team members Maxwell Lattimer and Brendan Hodge.

The Fighting Irish results this year included Tsawwassen’s Sebastian Peterson and Aidan Muir helping the Senior Men’s Heavyweight Quad crew earn a silver medal. It marked the first time VC has reached a podium at the nationals in this event. The future looks bright too with all but one of the crew members being in Grade 11. Rounding out the team are Lucas Tosetti and Ivan Rybkin.

In the Senior Men’s 72kg eight event, the Irish also earned silver and featured Carson Hale of Ladner and Trevor MacDougall of Tsawwassen. The crew also included Michael Doyle, Carson Hale, Noah Boquist, Matthew Ward, Duncan McAllister, Sebastien Layroye and Joshua Vinnick.

Local rowers also fared well in a couple of Junior Men’s events.

Ladner’s Steffan Hilpert, Jordan Drab, and Owen Kwok were members of the bronze medal winning 72kg 4+ Coxed Four crew. They were joined by Max Nadeau and Shakeel Jessa.

The South Delta trio also helped the Irish win another bronze in the Junior Men’s 72kg Coxed eight event. The other six members included: Adam Kalaw, Jeffrey Liu, Joal Ceholski, Zac Labrie, Jessa and Nadeau

Both crews were coached by Ladner’s Michael Lattimer.

Vancouver College finished tied for fifth in the Efficiency Award school standings. Ontario’s E.L. Crossley took top honours.
