The Ladner Zephyrs, a local recreational hockey team, recently presented the Delta Hospital Foundation with a cheque for $1,645, proceeds from its first annual Christmas Classic.

After winning a Coast Hockey League tournament over the Labour Day weekend last year, the Zephyrs decided to use their winnings, free ice time at the Richmond Ice Centre, to hold a charity hockey game to raise money for Delta Hospital.

"The team chose the Delta Hospital because we all grew up in Delta," said assistant captain Chad Taylor. "We have all benefited from the services and care of the hospital at one point in our lives throughout our years."

The team raised the money through social media, word of mouth and the Delta Hospital Foundation's online Build-A-Page tool. The Dec. 27 event's initial goal of $500 was significantly surpassed through the generous donations of teammates, family and friends.

Jackey Zellweger, the hospital foundation's corporate and event manager, was thrilled with the unique fundraising event.

"The Zephyrs really made this event their own. They approached us with this fantastic idea and took off with it. We are so grateful and amazed by the collective passion of every person on the team and everyone who supported their Christmas Classic."

Every year, individuals and groups raise money for Delta Hospital in their own creative ways by hosting independent fundraising events.

These events include everything from hockey games to plant sales to golf tournaments.
