Reduce the need for speed

With the nicer weather, the region sees more visitors and, thus, more drivers on the road.

ICBC is reminding drivers that speed can kill.

According to data from the Crown corporation, driving just five kilometres per hour over the speed limit increases your risk of crashing by 50%.

On average, across the province, ICBC says 84 people are killed, and 2,168 are injured in speed-related crashes.

"Speed is a significant contributing factor in collision fatalities in B.C.," said Chief Supt. Holly Turton, officer in charge of BC Highway Patrol, in a news release. "Police agencies throughout the province will be looking for speeding drivers to make our roads safer for everyone. Slow down so you have more time to react to the unexpected and reduce your risk of crashing."
