Victoria police said the carjacker bashed into a vehicle at the intersection of Cedar Hill Cross Road and Doncaster Drive before causing another collision minutes later, then abandoned the woman’s vehicle at Cook and Finlayson streets.

A man was arrested Monday after a carjacking on Johnson Street near Cook.

A woman called police about 11:50 a.m. saying she was entering her vehicle when she was pushed by a man, who then got in and drove the vehicle away. The incident occurred in the 1000-block of Johnson Street, between Cook and Vancouver streets.

Police said the man bashed into a vehicle at the intersection of Cedar Hill Cross Road and Doncaster Drive before causing another collision minutes later, then abandoned the woman’s vehicle at Cook and Finlayson streets.

Injuries from the collisions were all non-life-threatening.

After leaving the vehicle, the suspect ran off and tried to steal another vehicle nearby, but bystanders intervened after hearing a neighbour call out for help when the man jumped into the driver’s seat.

The man was pulled out and held until police arrived to make an arrest.

Police said the man was previously arrested on Sunday after attempting to steal an occupied vehicle in the 2900-block of Shelbourne Street.

He was physically removed by the owner and later charged with one count of attempted theft of a motor vehicle before being released with conditions.

Charges that include two counts of robbery, one count of theft of a motor vehicle, one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident and one count of failing to comply with conditions have been laid.

The man remains in custody pending a court appearance.
