Saanich Chief Const. Dean Duthie has agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Saanich Police Board.

The municipality’s top cop has been in the role since Feb. 1, 2022, after serving as deputy chief and a variety of other policing roles in Saanich over the past 29 years.

Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock, who is chair of the police board, said in a statement Friday that the board is grateful to Duthie and the Saanich Police Department senior leadership team for their “exceptional leadership.”

“This contract extension provides the public safety assurance and continuity that the community deserves and expects.”

Duthie said he is committed to police-officer wellness, equity and inclusivity, community connections and implementation of new technologies.

Duthie said it will all help guide officers and staff to stay healthy, motivated and equipped.

“Every day I see our officers, civilian staff and volunteers report for duty, I’m reminded of how each person contributes to our mission, values and shared vision,” he said in the statement.

Duthie was named acting deputy chief in 2019 and deputy chief in 2020.
