Prince George has once again stepped up to help its community.

The United Way of Northern BC (UWNBC) has announced it surpassed its fundraising goal of $30,000 for the 2020 Tree of Lights Campaign, finishing with a total of $30,557.

“We have been trying to put into words the gratitude we have for the incredible generosity of this community and find that nothing seems to express how overwhelmed we truly feel about this remarkable achievement," says UWNBC Executive Director Trista Spencer.

"It’s a testament to the heart of Prince George, and Northern BC, and we are so honoured to be able to do the work we do to support those who need it most.

"There are so many that came together to reach this goal; donors, sponsors, agencies, volunteers, community leaders, the UWNBC staff. It’s a true representation of the work we do every day – that each one of us can make a real difference by coming together in whatever way we can. Thank you!"

Funds raised will go to programming and supports around the drug abuse and overdose crisis.

"The UWNBC team will be hard at work in the coming months, ensuring that the proceeds from this campaign are directed to programming and supports that will make the most impact possible," a statement reads.

The goal was met thanks to a $3,000 donation from PG Recycling and Return-It Centre on Tuesday (Jan. 5).
