Delta MLA submits petition on behalf of hospital

Vicki Huntington gives legislature petition calling for the restoration of a full surgical program for Delta Hospital

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington introduced a 10,000-name petition in the legislature Wednesday calling on the provincial government to restore surgical services at Delta Hospital.

"Since our doctors raised their concerns in October, the community response has been tremendous," said Huntington. "The people of Delta care deeply about their hospital and the services it provides. We value what our doctors have to say and when they spoke, the community responded. I'm honoured to present this petition on behalf of the residents of Delta."

Friends of Delta Hospital collected the signatures requesting the province restore 24-hour surgical services at Delta Hospital.

Huntington has raised the issue repeatedly in the legislature and has been asking Health Minister Terry Lake to meet with the doctors since last year.

"We're slowly making progress," said the independent MLA. "The minister has now agreed to a meeting with the doctors, which is a first step. This petition will help to put pressure on the Fraser Health Authority and the Ministry of

Health to grant our community the same level of care provided in other jurisdictions."

The petition has been circulating in Ladner and Tsawwassen for several months.
