Surrey’s Simon Horlick, 22, takes to the controls inside one of Pacific Flying Club’s flight simulators. The equipment can simulate a number of different planes, from a trainer to a multi-engine commuter aircraft. Horlick was the only local competitor at the John C. Webster Trophy Competition, which was last Saturday hosted by the Pacific Flying Club at Boundary Bay Airport. Horlick is attending BCIT’s Airline & Flight Operations Program and is the third Pacific Flying Club student to represent B.C. in the competition.

Pacific Flying Club hosted a national contest for amateur pilots last week at Boundary Bay Airport.

David Shi, representing the Atlantic from Moncton Flight College, was announced as the winner of the John C. Webster Trophy Competition Saturday.

The competition is an annual event to determine the "Top Amateur Pilot in Canada."

Jack Bradshaw, representing central Ontario from Brampton Flight College, was the runner-up.

As part of the competition the pilots performed a flight test, a simulator test, two written exams and an interview with judges, explained Pat Kennedy, chief financial officer with Pacific Flying Club.

There were nine total competitors. B.C. was represented by Simon Horlick, flying out of Pacific Flying Club.

Surrey's Horlick is attending BCIT's Airline Flight Operations Program and is the third Pacific Flying Club student in recent years to represent the province in the competition.

This marked the first time the club has hosted the event, Kennedy noted.

"We think it was very successful. It was held in conjunction with the club's 50th anniversary of continuous operation," she said. "We were lucky the weather held for them."

The John C. Webster Trophy Competition was established in 1932 by the late Dr. J.C. Webster who wished to perpetuate the memory of his son, John, who lost his life in an aircraft accident at St. Hubert, Quebec in 1931.

Air Canada is the major sponsor of the event and numerous other Canadian aviation companies and associations support the contest yearly.
