South Delta Crime Beat: $19,000 fraudulently charged to line of credit

The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen

• March 14, 12:15 p.m., 1000-block of Pacific Drive: Complainant reported they had been the victim of an email phishing scam. Complainant advised police they had provided credit card and personal information in response to an email claiming to be from TELUS.  Complainant has cancelled credit card, reported stolen SIN to Canada Services and changed email address. 

• March 15, 5:27 p.m., 5200-block of 8A Avenue: Complainant reported break in at their residence sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Approximately $20,000 in jewelry stolen.

• March 16, 11:49 a.m., 1200-block of Malvern Place: Complainant reported sometime overnight their vehicle was broken into while parked out front of residence.  Approximately $200 in damage done to passenger side window that was smashed. 

• March 16, 11:53 a.m., 5500-block of 18th Avenue: Complainant reported $100 of fuel stolen. Damage to vehicle approximately $30 to repair cut fuel line.  

• March 16, 8:28 p.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Report received of possible theft of several items from local business. Suspect was confronted by store staff after being observed leaving business carrying a bulging bag. Male suspect denied theft and fled location before police arrived.

• March 17, 3:14 p.m.: 5600-block of 14th Avenue: Complainant attended Delta police headquarters to report VISA card had been compromised. Complainant had received a call 10 days prior from female alleging to be from VISA saying credit card had been compromised and to provide banking details to issue new card. Banking details were then used to cancel existing card, reissue new card and charge $19,000 to complainant’s line of credit.

• March 17, 8:11 p.m., 5000-block of Canoe Pass Way: Report received from local business of theft of items from store. Police attended and located suspect in the area with a bag of stolen goods in his possession. Suspect was arrested.

• March 17, 10:18 p.m., 5200-block of 4A Avenue: Complainant reported break and enter occurred while they were away from residence. Approximately $2,000 in cash and gift certificates, and several pieces of jewelry missing.

Ladner

• March 13, 10:06 a.m., 7400-block of Hume Avenue: Complainant reported the theft of $6,000 worth of gas from local business. Video from neighbouring business to be reviewed for possible suspects.

• March 13, 12:54 p.m., 7400-block of Vantage Way: Report received of break and enter at local business. Detached 50-horsepower Yamaha boat engine worth approximately $3,000 stolen after access gained through fence. Small tools possibly used to detach motor recovered at scene and seized for prints. Estimated damage to fence: $200.

• March 15, 10:27 a.m., 5100-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police attended local business after report of counterfeit currency used by two separate males to purchase $25 gift cards.  Two counterfeit $100 bills seized from business. Store surveillance footage, which captured both suspects, provided to police.

• March 15, 6:01 p.m., 72nd Street: Report received of theft from vehicle while parked at local dog park. Passenger side window was broken and purse containing American passports, personal identification and credit cards stolen.

• March 15, 8:56 p.m., 5000-block of 48th Avenue: Complainant reported an unlocked vehicle parked on street was entered. Items stolen include two grey backpacks with earthquake kits, electrical tools and a metal Toro sign.

• March 16, 9:13 a.m., 5400-block of Crescent Drive: Complainant reported attempted theft of locked vehicle parked in front of residence. Driver side window and steering column smashed causing approximately $600 in damage. Theft of stereo/phone adapter valued at $30. 

• March 17, 11:25 a.m., 4600-block of 47A Street: Late report received of theft of men’s Diadora Corsa bicycle valued at $350 from residence. Bicycle was locked to a tree in the driveway. The lock had been cut and left behind. 

• March 18, 5:46 p.m., 4800-block of 53rd Street: Complainant reported his work vehicle had been broken into while parked in secure underground lot. Approximately $30,000 worth of Hilti tools stolen, and approximately $1,000 damage to rear canopy of vehicle.
