A Surrey man is facing several charges connected to an alleged assault of the Delta Police officer.

On Saturday night around 8 p.m., a Delta police officer conducted a street check of an adult male in the 8600-block of 120th Street in North Delta.

According to police, the male was initially cooperative until he learned he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest in relation to a Surrey incident.

“The male then fled on foot, but after a brief foot chase, the officer caught him,” said Delta Police public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. “The male then engaged in a physical altercation with the officer escaping custody.”

Brooks said during the altercation the officer sustained injuries to his upper body face and shoulder. Although injured, the officer gave chase on foot, but due to his injuries was unable to continue. The male was not located despite assistance from RCMP and the deployment of K-9 and Air One.

The Delta officer was transported by ambulance to hospital where he was treated and released the following morning. The officer remains off duty while recovering from his injuries.

On Wednesday morning, Surrey RCMP advised Delta Police that their patrol officers had located and arrested the suspect on an outstanding warrant on an unrelated matter. He was located around 1:40 a.m. in the 9100-block of King George Blvd.

He appeared in court today to deal with the warrant.

Crown has also now approved charges against this individual stemming from the Delta incident. Jessie Nolan, 34, has been charged with assault of a police officer causing bodily harm and obstructing a police officer.

“Collaboration across jurisdictions with our partners in law enforcement sends a clear message to the criminal element that you can run, but you can’t hide (for long) because police agencies work together to keep all of our communities safer,” added Brooks.
