The transportation minister's comments about government transparency on the George Massey Tunnel replacement are simply an attempt to deflect the main issue.

My office requested the business case, briefing notes and technical data that supported the replacement options chosen for public consultation. We were told there were no records. Linking us to public websites and 15 pages of dated traffic data was not an answer to our question.

Optimist columnist Ian Robertson requested "documents, data, analysis prepared for the premier to allow her to determine and to announce that the Massey Tunnel would be replaced by a bridge over the Fraser River." He was told there were no records.

Government has either failed to disclose, or - perhaps worse - to keep, internal records supporting the decision to build a bridge. In my opinion, the issue is simple: the public has a right to transparent decisions that are supported by good data and sound financial analysis. We have a right to a paper trail.
