Nancy Dean hangs paintings in Gallery 1710.

Visual art is what we see, right? But how important is visual art in helping us understand something we don't at first comprehend? A fresh idea, a totally different approach to a difficult problem, a radical political idea?

The vibrant work displayed regularly by South Delta Artists Guild members at Tsawwassen's Gallery 1710 puts each artist's original mind and talent on show, as in the current Summer Showcase, running through Aug. 1. Is the artist presenting a quiet contemplative watercolour, like Enja Jorge or Ann Hilton, or exploring energetic multi-surfaced paintings like Jan Rankin or Sandra Taylor? A connection is on offer.

Artist Nancy Dean, currently serving her second term as guild president, is also an interior designer and excellent photographer whose interests complement each other well. Cityscapes particularly attract her, and her striking interpretations of Vancouver are popular. Strong angles, deep shadows and intense colours provide motifs, while Vancouver's rain brings vivid night street and water reflections to put on canvas.

An award-winning Tsawwassen artist, she also paints local and foreign landscapes, working in acrylic.

Serving with Dean on the new board of directors are: Jan Rankin (vice president), Rod Winning (past president and communications), Mary Ellen Bullock (treasurer), Judith Turner (membership), Lynne Mackenzie (workshops), Gloria Malaka (outside venues), Sandra Taylor (gallery), Liette Kjorvel (scheduling) and directors at large Beverly Brazier, Al Gejdos, Barbara Lynch and Hilary Matson.

At the AGM, the outstanding long-time service of Lorna Wladickuk as treasurer was recognized by her appointment as an honourary member. In presenting her final detailed financial report, she noted the guild is in excellent standing, and the cost of upcoming fall workshops will therefore be reduced.

Following Summer Showcase, the next exhibit and sale, Celebration, will run Aug. 4 to 28. The gallery will continue to be open Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drop-in programs run all summer, Tuesday to Friday, in the studio/workshop at Gallery 1710.
