The B.C. SPCA is cutting its rabbit adoption fees in half for the next week in hopes it will encourage people to take home one — or more — of the 250 rabbits that are either in animal centres or with foster families across the province.

There are 27 rabbits up for adoption at the Victoria SPCA branch. The animal welfare organization says it’s seen an increase in the number of bunnies dropped off at the B.C. SPCA — including a recent large intake with many pregnant rabbits.

“The recent large intake of rabbits has definitely made the need to find forever homes more urgent,” said Adrienne McBride, senior director for the organization’s Community Animal Centres. “But we have been seeing an increase in rabbits in our care for months now.”

McBride said some rabbits come into the B.C. SPCA’s care because people adopt two rabbits mistakenly thinking they’re the same sex — and end up with babies. Others are surrendered because their owners are moving and their new home doesn’t accept pets.

“Rabbits love to live with other rabbits, so if you have one, now is a great time to give your bun a companion,” she said. “Just make sure the proper introductions are made.”

To prevent future population explosions, all rabbits adopted through the B.C. SPCA are spayed or neutered before they go to their fur-ever homes.

The adopt-a-rabbit-for-$20 incentive runs July 14 to 23.
