The owner of a red Audi that was captured on video driving the wrong way on the Patricia Bay Highway on Wednesday is facing charges under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Sidney-North Saanich RCMP said they responded to a report of a vehicle travelling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway near Beacon Avenue around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Police confirmed the licence plate and identified the owner using dash-cam footage provided by the public.

“This was an incredibly dangerous situation and we are grateful that no one was harmed,” said Cpl. Andres Sanchez, media relations officer, noting there were several instances where the driver nearly caused head-on collisions.

“At highway speeds, this could have been disastrous.”

The owner was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act and police are continuing to investigate why and where the car entered oncoming traffic.

It is not a criminal investigation, Sanchez said.
