Suspects sought in $10K sunglasses theft, pepper-spraying at Burnaby mall

$10K worth of sunglasses were stolen and a Metrotown mall security guard pepper-sprayed earlier this month. Burnaby RCMP is now looking for two male suspects.
Burnaby RCMP is looking for help identifying two men who allegedly pepper-sprayed a mall cop and took off with about $10,000 worth of sunglasses from a store inside Metrotown mall earlier this month.

Police responded to the Metropolis at Metrotown mall just before 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 17, but the suspects had already fled the scene, according to a police news release.

The two men had reportedly stolen about $10,000 worth of sunglasses from a store inside the mall and then pepper-sprayed a mall security guard who tried to intervene, the release said.

Police have released photos of the suspects and are now asking for the public's help to identify them.

The first man was wearing a dark baseball cap with white L.A. Dodgers logo, white medical mask, glasses, white bomber jacket with a Chicago Bulls crest, black pants and dark blue and purple shoes.

The second suspect was wearing a dark baseball cap with a red logo, grey jacket, dark shirt with "Chicago" and "23" written on the front, blue jeans, black shoes with white soles and a black backpack.

"Everyone has the right to feel safe at work, and this includes security guards," Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj said in the release. "We need your help identifying the individuals responsible for this assault and theft."

Anyone who may be able to identify either suspect is asked to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). Quote file 2023-32698.
