A former Vancouver man found with a large cache of weapons in his Vancouver home in 2021 has been sentenced to 18 months' probation and banned from possessing weapons for life.

On Jan. 26, 2021, police were called to a loud argument at Darryl Lee Teal’s residence. Inside, they found a collection of weapons, including firearms, body armour, swords and ammunition.

Crown prosecutor Jonas Dow told Vancouver provincial court Judge James Sutherland that Teal “was either getting ready for the zombie apocalypse or an enthusiast of weapons.”

But, Dow said, Teal “wasn’t arming himself for an invasion” but instead couldn’t control his collecting of weapons.

“Teal is a weapons enthusiast as opposed to someone plotting some sinister scheme to kill or injure others,” Sutherland said.

Teal pleaded guilty to possession contrary to an order and possession of a firearm without licence and/or registration.

Court documents on one count said Teal was in possession of a firearm, crossbow, a prohibited weapon, a restricted weapon, a prohibited device, ammunition, prohibited ammunition or explosive substance, a Remington shotgun, an SKS semi-automatic rifle and associated ammunition while prohibited from doing so.

Two counts of possession of unauthorized non-firearms were stayed.

Court documents indicate those to include a folding knife, push daggers, a Taser and pepper spray.

Sutherland also gave Teal, a former oil rig worker who is moving to Edmonton, a six-month curfew.

The seized weapons will be destroyed.
