Delta police have a fun afternoon in store today as they take their annual Police Day online.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DPDs annual day of fun, interactive booths, displays, mascots and food has to be cancelled this year, but DPD didn’t want the community to miss out on the fun, so they are bringing Police Day to you on Facebook Live and Instagram Live.

Starting at 1 p.m. today (Thursday) on Facebook and Instagram through a variety of pre-taped and live videos, the department will introduce you to different officers from the department and different units of the DPD.

“One of our school liaison officers will be reading from a book that was written by one of our officers. One of the crowd pleasers at Police Day is the K9's and you'll have the opportunity to virtually meet Police Service Dog, Garner and his handler, Const. Cottrill,” said DPD spokesperson Kristy Neville. “There will be a bike safety demonstration, a tour of our command centre, which is normally available to tour in-person, but that’s can’t happen this year. We have our collision reconstructionist who will walk people through his job and what happens at the scene of a collision and then we also have our District Community Liaison Officer Const. Lee Chapman, who will be taking questions in between, so live on Instagram and Facebook.”

Neville said the idea is to make the event as interactive as possible.

“All of these videos will live on our Instagram and Facebook pages so if parents and kids are not available they can go back and watch them later on,” she said. “This is an opportunity for kids to have some fun and learn more about Delta police.”
