Chamber music fans will have a chance to see some of Canada’s finest musicians a little closer to home.

Starting in September, the Vancouver Chamber Music Society starts its Tsawwassen series with a number of concerts at the South Delta Baptist Church.

Artistic director Kevin Park said he’s excited to bring this music to South Delta.

“This is the first chamber music series that has been presented on a regular basis in Tsawwassen,” said Park. “We are trying to fulfill our mandate of sharing our music to a broader audience, so the way to do that is to create these types of music series. We know that we have lots of people from South Delta who travel into Vancouver and when we present our Christmas show here the venue is packed, so we know the interest is there.”

Park said discussions on a South Delta series started last year.

“At the same time we are bringing the series to New Westminster as well as Coquitlam,” he said. “This series in South Delta is a bit different because the ones in New West and Coquitlam we are partnering with the cities. Here in South Delta, the goal is to create a committee to help us run the series and help us with publicity. The quality of concert that we present is very popular. People seem to really appreciate the affordability for the quality. For example, our matinee series has only been running for a year, but it is very popular. We envision bringing the same quality here to South Delta.”

Park said the South Delta Baptist Church is a beautiful venue.

“When I first stepped into the church, I thought it was a little too big for chamber music, but then I started to clap and sing and the sound was great. Then I started imagining all the people in the audience and how that will sound. It’s going to sound fantastic,” he said. “You can see and hear really well so the venue is really perfect to accommodate small ensemble all the way to the chamber orchestra.”

The first concert, set for Sept. 13, features the Vancouver Cello Quartet.

Subsequent concerts will follow on Nov. 22, Feb. 28, April 24 and May 15. All concerts start at 7:30 p.m.

Until June 30, the Vancouver Chamber Music Society is offering an early bird ticket special with general tickets starting at $100 and student tickets at $80. A regular subscription for the music series is $140 general and $100 for students. Call 778-847-3890 or visit www.vancouverchambermusic.com.
