Fans of legendary UK groups the Beatles and Pink Floyd will want to mark April 13 down on their calendars as a pair of tribute bands visit Genesis Theatre in Ladner for a Fab + Floyd concert.
The double-bill features The Day Trippers, billed as Vancouver’s own Beatles experience, and Pigs, “Canada’s most authentic Pink Floyd tribute.”
Expect to hear songs from the White Album as well as a complete performance of The Dark Side of the Moon.
Both of the classic albums were recorded at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London, notes Day Trippers member Marty Zylstra.
Zylstra is also friends with Pigs singer and guitarist Josh Szczepanowski.
“We joked it would be great to do a show together and then this came up,” says Zylstra, who describes his friend as a great guitar player and talented guy.
Zylstra says he got really heavily into the Beatles and went “down the rabbit hole” into the famous English band.
“I listened to the White Album probably every day for a year in college,” he explains, noting he would have it on in his car during his commutes.
The Day Trippers got started in 2012, he notes, recalling memories from their first rehearsal.
“It was like nothing I’d ever experienced musically. You’re in a room with fans of your favourite music, playing your favourite music and it sounds like your favourite music the first try. It was incredible.”
Pigs is a Victoria-based tribute band and Szczepanowski is the David Gilmour of the group. He notes they try to be as authentic to Pink Floyd as possible.
“We play everything exactly the way it really was done,” he says. “We study a lot of live stuff to make sure that’s all correct as well. We use all the right gear, which almost nobody does because it’s very frustrating to use all that old stuff.”
He says the group is really excited for the upcoming show in Ladner.
“They’re very talented, too, so I think it’s going to be a fun experience,” he says.
Ghostfinger Productions presents Fab + Floyd on Friday, April 13 at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner. Doors are at 7:30 p.m. while the concert is at 8 p.m.
