Tsawwassen's Maggie Stewart is having a blast being part of Carousel Theatre for Young People's annual Teen Shakespeare Program.

The South Delta Secondary student has a title role in Romeo and Juliet, which opens next Friday on Granville Island.

"It's great to get that real theatre experience," says Stewart, 14, noting the program has a professional feel to it and the actors aren't treated like young kids.

During the intensive sixweek program teen actors are treated as professional artists and receive training in voice, movement and text analysis toward a fully-staged public performance, a press release explains.

"It's really exciting," she says.

Playing Juliet in the tragic tale of star-crossed lovers is definitely a challenge, Stewart says.

"She goes through a lot at such a young age."

This is Stewart's first time in a production of a Shakespearean play.

Actor, director and theatre educator Mike Stack is leading a cast of 15 teen actors.

Romeo and Juliet runs from July 28 to Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Performance Works Outdoor Stage, 1218 Cartwright St., Vancouver. Admission is free but advance reservations are available for $5. Contact the box office through tickets.carouseltheatre.ca or 604-685-6217.
