Safety alert: Canada-wide recall for swivel chairs due to 'fall hazard'

The base of the chair detaches, posing a risk of injury.

Health Canada warns that a brand of swivel chair poses a fall and injury hazard due to an issue with its base.

A safety notification issued on Wednesday (Dec. 21) states that several batches of Ikea's Odger Swivel Chair are being recalled that were sold in the anthracite colour with date stamps before and including 2221 (yyww).

The chair has a "bowl-shaped seat and rounded backrest with adjustable height and swivel," and its star-shaped support base may unexpectedly detach, posing a risk of falling and injury.

As of Dec. 19, the company hasn't received any reports of injuries in Canada. However, it has received 19 reports of the star-shaped base detaching around the world, with five of them resulting in injury.

Health Canada notes that the white version of Odger swivel chair does not pose the same hazard.

Ikea reported that 3,302 units of the affected product were sold in Canada between October 2019 to December 2022.

What you should do

You should immediately stop using the chair and return it to an Ikea Canada store for a refund.
